A Detroit News–WDIV poll released Tuesday, the day of President Donald Trump’s Detroit visit, shows close to two-thirds of Michiganians said they are seeing their household costs increase.

The telephone survey of 600 likely Michigan voters found that 64 percent said their household costs have gone up in the past year, with 82.5 percent saying groceries were the budget item rising the most, The News reports. The Jan. 2–6 survey, conducted by the Lansing-based Glengariff Group, had a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.

"One of (former President) Joe Biden's biggest mistakes in 2024 was telling voters they were wrong about the economy and prices," Richard Czuba, founder of the Glengariff Group, told the Detroit News. "And here we are in 2026, Donald Trump is doing the exact same thing. Nobody wins by telling the voters they're wrong, and it's very clear voters are very put out by the cost of food."

Overall, the poll showed a 44 percent plurality of likely voters gave Trump a failing grade of a D or F for the economy, while 38 percent said he deserves an A or B grade. Another 17 percent gave him a C, while 1 percent said they didn't know.
